5 Minutes on Data: Will international students be deported?
Welcome to 5 minutes on data, a news segment that relates data science to the current news. Today we will be evaluating the questions, will international students be deported?.
INTRODUCTION
Last week, USA immigration issued new rules for international students basically stating that international students will lose their immigrant status if their classes become online. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many universities made plans to move their in-person classes to fully online in the fall to avoid widespread of the disease. To make matters worse, for students who are out of the country, they can be denied entry into the USA if their classes are solely online.
Reason for the deportation policy
Many sane heads might be wondering the point of this ludicrous policy, so we decided to do research to find out the motivation of the US government. We found 3 major reasons for the policy:
To enforce universities to open up: There is a big push by the US government to get schools to open in the fall even though many health experts have constantly said it is not safe to do so. The reason for the push by the government is more economical than anything hence the reason why universities are being cautious.
Limit Legal immigration of students: Another reason, for this policy, is a way for the government to limit international students from emigrating to the USA. Many international students do plan on emigrating to the united states after completing their studies and the current administration for some reason decided to limit it. To prove our point, right now other classes of USA visas are being restricted as well.
Excite anti-immigrant to vote: This policy is a way to get Americans who are anti-immigration to vote. A case can be made that the government is putting Americans first and this would get people out to vote in November for the current administration.
Data Analysis Of International Students
To understand the impact of international students in the USA, we performed data analysis using Tableau on meaningful information gotten from an organization called the power of international education. In this visualization, we look at the place of origin of international students, how many of them enrolled over the years and how many enrolled last year.
From the visualization, we notice that international students come from all over the world and are consistently increasing in enrollments. Last year alone, about 1,095,299 international students enrolled for programs in universities with the majority of students coming from countries like China, India, South Korea, and Nigeria.
Economic impact of international students
Aside from numbers, international students also provide economic benefits to the USA, $45 Billion was spent on education by these students. The amount spent on education does not include other economic impact of the students such as purchasing USA products, creating sustainable businesses and hiring American citizens for those businessesl. This stupendous policy will end up affecting the USA adversely.
Universities taking Action
Universities are taking steps to stop the US government from implementing the deportation policy by suing the government. Institutions like Harvard, MIT and Johns Hopkins university sued the government last week.
Universities are also creating hybrid classes: a mix of online and in-person classrooms to navigate against the rules of the deportation policy. By doing so, international students will not lose their immigration status.
So will international students be deported?
The answer is , this is very unfathomable as there is a strong resistance against such policy. To prove our point, earlier today, the Wall street journal released a report stating that the USA government rescinded the policy and students will be able to take online classes. So victory at last
